On May 9th, 2016, Frédéric Bouchard, President of Association francophone pour le savoir (Acfas), opened the 84th Congress of Acfas at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) in the presence of Denis Coderre, Honorary President of the Congress and Mayor of the city of Montreal, and Dominique Anglade, Minister of Economy, Science and Innovation in Quebec.
Le congrès de l’Acfas n’est pas fait seulement pour et par les chercheurs, mais également pour la société
The main goal of the 84th Congress, called “Points de Rencontre” (“Meeting Points“), was to promote the importance of a new generation of young researchers and of the dialogue between scientists and society. Overall, the Congress gathered on 6100 participants (1500 of which are young researchers). 4000 scientific communications, 600 independent communications and 8 activities opened to the general public were organized during the Congress (e.g., concours “La preuve par l’image“, “Ma thèse en 180 secondes“, etc.).
Le plus proche équivalent dans le monde anglophone est le congrès de l’American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
Known as one of the biggest meetings for francophone research and knowledge in the world, the Congress received an important media coverage with journalists from ICI Radio Canada, Le Devoir and CHOQ, the UQAM campus radio. Besides, the presence of many public and political figures during the Congress strengthened its prominent position as a major place of dialogue between francophone research and society.
